Participant Activities

No one from your family will have to travel or meet with the researchers. We will not ask you or your child to take any tests. If the child who will participate in this study is still a minor, he or she will not have to do anything as part of this study, other than maybe give their permission for researchers to watch their videos--everything we need from him or her is already on the birthday videos.

If you agree to participate, we will ask you to do the following things:

Talk briefly with Jason. Before you begin your part of the study, you will need to have a short conversation with Jason. This can take place over the phone, or if you live in Ellensburg, we can meet in person, if you like. The conversation will last about 20 minutes. Jason will give you information about the study, help you decide if your child qualifies, and outline the steps that we will take to complete the study.

Read and complete a brief informational packet. This will involve 1) completing one or two documents that give us permission to do the study 2) filling out a questionnaire, and 3) answering some questions about your child and the tapes you are sharing. This may take about an hour. You might want to contact us on the phone or by e-mail if you have any questions or do not understand what we are asking you to do, which might add some time to this process.

Provide us with home video of first, second, and/or third birthday parties. This will involve 1) finding and reviewing your videos, 2) making a copy of them, if you don't want to share an original, and 3) attaching a label to them and getting them to us. The amount of time this takes will depend on the amount of video you have. If you live outside the Ellensburg, Washington area, you will also spend a few minutes preparing videos and documents for mailing.

Provide us with copies of some of your child's school, medical, and psychological records, if you are a parent of a child with disabilities. This will involve 1) obtaining copies of some of the documents used in the diagnosis and later assessment of your child (like IQ tests or rating scales), and 2) attaching labels to the documents and sharing them with us. The amount of time you spend collecting preparing these documents will depend on the number and availability of the documents.

These are just general descriptions of the tasks involved. You'll find more information when you contact us to participate.
